Time to Eat, Jersey Style

Are you looking for someplace to eat in central Jersey?  New Jersey is full of many retaurants that serve probably the best food that will fill your tummy and leave you with extra money in your pockets.  As a long time resident in central Jersey, I believe there are five must-go places for you to eat out.

  • Hoagie Haven - If you are craving a delicious cheese steak, this place is definitely for you.  Located on Nassau Street in Princeton, this small hoagie shop may perhaps have the best cheese steak next to the world famous Philadelphia cheese steak.  Add melted provolone cheese, extra sweet onions, fresh green and red peppers, extra sizzle with hot sauce, spicy jalapenos...whatever it is, it will satisfy even the hungriest of people.  In addition to these tummy-filling cheese steaks, an 18" cheese steak costs only about $5!!!! Now, that's a deal you can't ever pass up!
  • Max's - Being a Filipino, I believe the best Authentic Filipino food is found at Max's of Manila!  Right in the heart of Jersey City, you can have delicious traditional food that consists of Kare-Kare, Dinugooan, Bar-be-Q, Si-Sig, sinigang, chicken adobo, pina paitan, and lumpia just like back home.  But probably the dish that entices to keep customers coming back for more is the crispy fried chicken! With the secret herbs and spices that you can only get from the Philippines, this fried chick is to die for!  Your taste buds will never forget the taste of this one-of-a-kind friend chicken.  But before you come, keep in mind that finding a parking spot can be a big pain in the butt!
  • Joe's - Located in Hillsborough, NJ, this authentic pizzeria will win your hearts with some of the best Italian food you will ever taste in your life!  The service is great as they will immediately accomodate you.  Their pizza is great but probably the two best food they serve are their hot calzones and their Italian Hamburgers.  The calzone is loaded with imported cheeses from Italy and the freshest vegetables in town.  What's great about it is that one calzone can serve about three people! Their Italian hamburger is delicious!  personally, I enjoy eating very large hamburgers with fresh vegetables and cheese melting off the sides of the very juicy hamburger.  The servings are so big that I guarantee you that you will need to take home your food!
  • Grease Trucks - Located in the famous Rutgers University, this place to eat is a definite must-see. Grease trucks is exactly what it sounds like; a group of food trucks in an empty parking lot right in the center of the campus serving delicious greasy hoagies called "Fat Sandwiches" to hungry students.  My favorite truck is called "Mr. C's" and my favorite sandwhich is the... hmmm...ALL OF THEM!  I'm the kind of guy that will eat anything especially if its loaded with greasy fries, melted cheese, meat, and anything else that tastes awesome!  After a night of hanging out with my friends, this place is the answer to our grumbling tummies! For about $5 each sandwich, you can choose the Fat Darryl, the Fat Cat, or whatever it is you like on your hoagie and just go to town with all the grease and explosion of taste that you can't find anywhere else!  These sandwiches are not for the diet-conscious individuals.
  • Stuff Yer Face - Perhaps my favorite restaurant in all of New Jersey is Stuff Yer Face.  This place is located on the busy party town of New Brunswick on Easton Ave (Rutgers University).  In fact, it's only about 200 yards away from the Grease Trucks.  Perhaps the best food to get once you step foot in this bar and grill, are their strombolis called "Bolis."  You can load it with anything your heart desires whether it be mozzarella cheese, jalapenos, meat, peppers, onions, etc. which you can get in three different sizes.  For me and my wife, our favorite is the "huge" size vegetaboli.  We figured to go a little "healthier" as we also get their nachos loaded with cheddar cheese and all the other bad stuff that tastes so good!  In the end, we each get a liter-sized mug, yes a LITER-sized mug filled with Coors Light for only about $5.50!  All of this will cost you about $24.  Not bad for a date!  In a scale of 1 to 10, I have to give Stuf Yer Face and 11 for the great food, affordable prices, and excellent ambience!

I hope I was able to help you decide where to go the next time your tummy tells you, "It's time to eat!"
